Burke Lee (licensed USCG captain) and his wife, Stel, are seasoned and confident boaters. During their 40 years of marriage, they have developed their boating skills together on small and large power and sailing vessels in the waters of the eastern U.S., Canada, Bahamas & Caribbean. Most of their boating time has been spent on the coastal waters of South Carolina and more specifically, the estuaries around Johns Island, Kiawah Island, Mt. Pleasant, and peninsular Charleston.
Following retirement from their home building careers, they took a year to experience the adventure of “America’s Great Loop”, a 6,000 mile cruise around the eastern half of the U.S. via the ICW, Hudson River, Erie Canal, Trent-Severn Canal, Great Lakes, Illinois/Missisippi Rivers and the Gulf of Mexico. Leaving their home base on Johns Island in April 2014, they spent 364 days on the water, visiting 11 states and Canada along the way. They recorded this unforgettable trip in Our Great Loop Blog.
As natives of the Charleston area, Burke and Stel have a passion for sharing their love of the water, local wildlife and the natural beauty of the Lowcountry. Their warmth, hospitality and enthusiasm to share local knowledge makes an excursion with them an experience to remember.
The Estrellita, meaning “little star” in Spanish, is a 1989 classically designed 42-foot Monk Trawler. The beauty of the boat is defined by its classic lines, teak exterior railings and teak interior walls, floors and cabinetry. She has 2 state rooms, 2 bathrooms (heads), fully equipped galley and comfortable salon. All HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems have been updated as well as electronics, navigation and sound systems. Equipped with 2 helm stations, she offers protection from the weather at the lower station and a panoramic view from the bridge that accommodates the Captain and comfortably seats six guests.
With a 3’9″ draft, the Estrellita can slip into most tidal creeks for anchoring. She carries a 10’ hard bottom dinghy for easy access to the nearest beach. An 8kw generator allows all systems to be functional regardless of her location. Estrellita is powered by twin 210 hp Cummins Diesel engines, which push her at an average of 9 knots….but who’s in a hurry when you are in one of the most beautiful places in the world?
